Church Abuse and Disillusionment

Surprised? Curious?

Don’t be. You’ve likely arrived here for a good reason.

Let me tell you a story.

The Prodigal Party Boy

Getting out

A young college student travels 1,000 miles away from home – looking to escape his parents’ rules.

Embracing his newfound freedom, he parties hardy – until one day, a group of friends invite him to a Bible study.

Getting right

A new experience for this college kid, his newfound faith excites him. For many months, he reads his Bible nearly an hour a day. Just can’t get enough.

Getting in trouble

Then, he commits a sin that church frowns on greatly.

The church confronts him – very harshly – with the error of his way – and church leadership mandate many legalistic rules.

Getting convicted

The young man feels very controlled – manipulated – trapped.

So, he goes through the motions – for decades – seeking to please his “superiors” above all else.

Of course, there are times of serious effort toward growth and change. And he loves God as best he can.

But somehow, his faith doesn’t seem as genuine, anymore.

Getting hurt

For the “do more” church, this young man’s best just isn’t good enough. And he suffers through many years of feeling inadequate and having “to perform” to gain church leadership approval.

He gets married, and all hell breaks loose. Everything he’s learned in church about being a good spouse totally backfires.

And the marriage finally implodes – after years of mediation attempts by the church’s “appointed shepherds.”

Getting disillusioned

His faith jaded, he has trouble trusting people in church. Thoroughly confused by his church experience, he evens wrestles to truly trust God.

Getting lost

In the end, he’s left with no joy – desire to attend church. His faith wavers.
